Bi Feng Tang

Bi Feng Tang is a Hong Kong-based restaurant chain. It has a number of branches in Shanghai, serving mostly Cantonese dim sum. There are also dishes like fried noodles, wanton noodles, BBQ pork and other simple Cantonese delicacies. The branch at the Nanjing Xi Lu and Tongren Lu is most special, as it has tables outside the restaurant under umbrellas with bamboo fence and lanterns. A very nice place to have dinner in the evening. You can even have night snack as Bi Feng Tang is opened till 5AM in the morning. Don't forget to try the "chu chang fen" with shrimp, it is very nice. Price is reasonable, about RMB120++ for 2 people.

Di Shui Dong

Di Shui Dong is a popular Hunan restaurant in Shanghai. The chilli used in Hunan food is different than those used in Sichuan food - it is hot, but not numbing. Recommended dishes here are "duo jiao yu tou" (fish head steamed with chilli), "zi ran pai gu" (ribs) and "gan guo ji" (chilli pot chicken). There are many other good dishes in the menu. The food will be hot, but luckily they do serve cold Tsingtao beer. A good meal for 2 people should only cost you about RMB150 (or less, if you are not a big eater).

Tian Yuan Restaurant (Tian Yuan Ge Wa Guan Wei Tiang Guan)

A hidden gem in Changning District (western part of Shanghai, near Hongqiao), if you are the adventurous type. Their specialty is Chinese soups. The restaurant also serves a mixture of food, with a hint of Hunan taste, but not very spicy. The customers are mostly locals, so, it is a good place to go to experience the local lifestyle. A decent meal in this restaurant only costs about RMB100+.
